China Is Rewriting the Rules of Open-Source Software

China is increasingly positioning open-source technology as a strategic part of its technology ambitions, with Chinese companies and institutions playing a growing role in open-source software, artificial intelligence and hardware standards.

Why it matters: Open-source technology is becoming more than a developer tool. It is increasingly part of the global competition over technological independence, standards and infrastructure. For Africa, the opportunity is to move from primarily consuming open-source technology to contributing to and building within the global ecosystem.

African Startups Invited to Apply for Up to $1.5M from DIV Fund

African startups and innovators can apply for funding through Development Innovation Ventures (DIV), a programme supporting innovations designed to improve lives in developing countries. Funding is structured in stages, allowing promising solutions to receive capital as they move from testing and validation toward large-scale implementation.

Why it matters: One of the biggest challenges for African startups is moving from promising early-stage solutions to sustainable scale. Staged funding can give innovators access to capital that matches the maturity and evidence behind their solutions.

Askya AI Growth Platform Offers $200K in Zero-Equity Funding to African Startups

Askya Investment Partners has launched an AI Growth Platform aimed at helping Africa-focused, AI-native startups build and scale. The programme combines company-building support, technical resources, coaching and access to customers and talent, with selected startups eligible for up to US$200,000 in investment.

Why it matters: Africa's AI opportunity will depend not only on adopting artificial intelligence but on building African companies around it. Combining capital with technical and commercial support could help more founders move from experimentation to scalable products.
