Afrilingua

The social platform built for Africa's 2,000+ languages

Afrilingua is a unified social, messaging, and marketplace platform with built-in AI translation across African languages β€” so 1.4 billion people can finally use the internet in the languages they actually think in.

The Problem

Africa has over 1.4 billion people speaking more than 2,000 languages β€” yet the internet was not built for any of them. Every major social platform, messaging app, and marketplace was designed without African languages in mind, forcing users to navigate technology that constantly treats their mother tongue as an afterthought. The result is not just a language barrier β€” it is a cultural one. Context, humour, slang, and nuance get lost the moment someone switches to English or French just to participate online.

What They're Building

Afrilingua is a single unified platform combining social networking, messaging, a marketplace, and an AI personal assistant β€” all with integrated translation built specifically for African languages. Two core products sit inside the platform:

  • Gist β€” the social layer: feeds, group chats, communities, and in-app commerce. Think of it as a social network where language is never a barrier to community.
  • Aura β€” a language-aware AI digital assistant that handles productivity tasks with full cultural awareness. Not a generic chatbot β€” a personal assistant that understands the way you actually communicate.

The translation engine is the differentiator. Where most tools do word-for-word conversion, Afrilingua's approach preserves tone, slang, and cultural context β€” the difference between text that sounds right and text that sounds like a dictionary.

The Founder

πŸ‘€

Taiwo Raji

Founder Β· Afrilingua LLC

Taiwo Raji built Afrilingua from a conviction that technology should adapt to people β€” not the other way around. Having experienced firsthand the friction of navigating digital platforms in a language that is not your own, he set out to build the platform that 1.4 billion Africans actually deserve: one that starts with their languages, their cultures, and their communities. Based in Lewisville, Texas, Raji leads a 10-person team working to make that vision real.

✍️ Editor's Take

"The language gap in African tech is one of those problems that is so pervasive it has become invisible β€” until someone points it out. Afrilingua is pointing it out and building the alternative. The decision to combine social, commerce, and AI assistance in a single platform is ambitious, but the translation layer is the real bet. If Afrilingua can get culturally accurate African language translation right at scale, the size of the market is essentially the entire continent. Day-one paying subscribers after a bootstrapped launch is the kind of signal that matters."
